"today in the bay's" arturo santiago is live in san jose with what the city is planning to do about it and when they're planning to do it. arturo, good morning. >> reporter: the situation out here has not improved in the last few weeks. the population of the tent city in fact has swelled to more than 100 people and the city of san jose now has plans to move the encampment out the first week in march. now the site is located along spring street between taylor and heading streets. it's in a large grassy field near the guadalupe river park. the tents are spread out and clustered around trees on the land. the tent city started to grow back in january after state lands along the guadalupe river were cleaned up by caltrans and that displaced the homeless camping in those areas. mayor chuck reed says the people are trespassing here and there are no sanitary facilities and city cannot have people living i

homeless encampment in san jose is getting bigger and now the city gearing up to clear everyone out. the city says at least 100 people are now living in the makeshift tent city on spring street. official is apologizing this morning. the city administrator mistakenly accused wolfe of releasing a letter about a short-term lease extension in oakland to the media but not coliseum authority officials. that, however, was not true and after being told of santana's claim, wolfe fired out an e-mail saying it's sad when someone is devoted to harm someone else's reputation. yesterday santana apologized for the mistake calling it human error. >>> hosting those 2024 summer olympic games is an exciting proposition. the city of san jose says it simply doesn't have the money to make a bid. mayor chuck reed says it takes billions of dollars to host olympic games. a price tag just too heavy for a city that's still struggling to keep cops on the streets. san jose was one of 35 cities invited by the u.s. olympic committee to bid for those games. san francisco and sacramento were also asked. san francisco mayor ed lee says he wants to establish a permanent nonprofit organization to work on securing major events like the olympic games. >> not a bad idea because it keeps coming up. it would be nice. >> 4

riddell live with what they will be doing. good morning. >> joint effort between redwood city school district and the police department to try to make campuses on the peninsula safer and better prepared in case an active shooter were to attack. police are now encouraging patrol officers to become familiar with the local elementary school in their words to adopt the school asking officers to visit schools in the patrol zone on a daily basis, to become familiar with teachers and students and the layout of the campus. they are asking them to review security procedures to make sure campus is best prepared at keeping a gunman from entering school grounds. it is the only school with a full-time officer. the middle schools have part-timers. educators would be trained on how to handle an active situation. training sessions scheduled for next month and april. the schools are formulating a more comprehensive emergency response plan that would include police, fire, hospitals and other first responder. in august or september police and the district will conduct a full scale drill on one of the c

a deadly shooting that happened just a few hours ago. they tell us a man was shot in the city's western edition. alex savidge is live there now. what can you tell us so far? >> reporter: we are getting very limited information from police this morning. that is because it's so early on in this investigation. a sergeant that was out here confirmed a man was shot and killed. he was found right over near this corner. near the intersection of hayes and webster. an anonymous caller reported gunfire in this area around 2:00 this morning. we'll show you that video. officers were out here for most of the morning. police tell us the victim was rushed to the hospital after suffering at least one gunshot wound. he died there from his injuries. homicide investigators searching for the shooter involved here. a sergeant told me they don't have a description on the person to put out. in just a couple minutes ago i talked to one woman who told me she heard one gunshot and saw this crime scene. >> it sounded like a gunshot and i knew somebody was dead. police know that sound. it's bad. >> reporter: so as

are trying to do to keep students safe now. good morning. >> good morning to you. the redwood city police department announcing it is now working hand in hand with the school district to make campuses on the peninsula safer and better prepared if a shooter works to attack. as part of the plan, police are now encouraging the patrol officers to essentially adopt an elementary school asking officers to visit the elementary school in their zone on a daily basis so they can become familiar with teachers and students and lay out of the campus. they want to review security procedures to make sure the campus is best prepared at keeping a gunman from entering school grounds. it is the only campus with a full time officer. the middle schools have part timerses. educators like teachers, staff, administrators will be educated how to handle an active shooter situation. the schools are formulating a more comprehensive emergency response plan. in august or september, the police and the district plan to conduct a full scale drill on campus. it would be similar in nature to this one held in modesto. the e
